Oral sedation · Raleigh & Wake Forest

Oral Sedation Dentistry in Raleigh & Wake Forest, NC

A calming pill for moderate dental anxiety and longer visits.

Oral sedation uses a prescription pill taken before your appointment to leave you calm, drowsy, and relaxed while still awake and able to respond. It is a comfortable middle ground for moderate anxiety or longer treatment, with no needles required to get started. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home.

How it works

What is oral (pill) sedation?

Oral conscious sedation uses a prescription medication you take before treatment, usually about an hour ahead. As it takes effect you feel increasingly calm and drowsy, but you stay conscious and able to respond to us throughout the visit.

Because there is no IV involved, oral sedation is a good fit for patients who feel anxious about needles but still want more than laughing gas. Many patients remember little of the appointment afterward.

It pairs well with longer visits and with patients whose anxiety sits in the moderate range — more than mild nerves, but not requiring the depth of IV sedation.

What to expect

Before, during & after

BeforeWe review your medical history and medications, prescribe the medication with clear instructions on when to take it, and confirm a responsible adult can drive you to and from the visit.
DuringYou rest comfortably, calm and drowsy but still able to respond. We keep you comfortable and check in with you throughout treatment.
AfterThe effects can linger for the rest of the day, so your driver takes you home to rest. We review when you can eat and resume normal activity before you leave.

Frequently asked

Will I be asleep with oral sedation?
No. Oral sedation keeps you conscious and able to respond, just calm and drowsy. Many patients remember little of the visit, but you are not asleep the way you would be under general anesthesia.
Do I need a driver after oral sedation?
Yes. The effects can last for hours, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you while they wear off.
How long does oral sedation last?
It varies by medication and dose, but effects often continue for the rest of the day. We give you specific guidance for your appointment.
Is oral sedation safe?
Oral sedation is generally safe for appropriate candidates when chosen after a medical-history review and monitored during treatment. Every method has potential risks, so we review your health and medications first.
What should I do before an oral sedation appointment?
Follow the instructions we provide, which typically include when to take the medication, any eating guidance, and arranging your driver. Ask us if anything is unclear.
Which offices offer oral sedation?
All four Village Dental offices — Olde Raleigh, North Raleigh, Brier Creek, and Wake Forest — offer oral sedation.
Does insurance cover oral sedation?
Coverage varies by plan, procedure, and medical necessity. We can review your benefits and provide an estimate before treatment.
