Oral sedation · Raleigh & Wake Forest

Oral Sedation Dentistry in Raleigh & Wake Forest, NC

A calming pill for moderate dental anxiety and longer visits.

Oral sedation uses a prescription pill taken before your appointment to leave you calm, drowsy, and relaxed with effects that vary by medication and dose. It is a comfortable middle ground for moderate anxiety or longer treatment, with no needles required to get started. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home.

How it works

What is oral (pill) sedation?

Oral conscious sedation uses a prescription medication you take before treatment, at the time your dentist instructs. You may become drowsy or doze off; your response depends on the medication and dose.

Because there is no IV involved, oral sedation is a good fit for patients who feel anxious about needles but still want more than laughing gas. Many patients remember little of the appointment afterward.

Your health, planned treatment and previous experiences help determine whether oral sedation is appropriate. Oral and IV describe how medication is given; neither route alone determines the depth of sedation.

What to expect

Before, during & after

BeforeWe review your medical history and medications, prescribe the medication with clear instructions on when to take it, and confirm a responsible adult can drive you to and from the visit.
DuringYou rest comfortably, calm and drowsy but still able to respond. We keep you comfortable and check in with you throughout treatment.
AfterThe effects can linger for the rest of the day, so your driver takes you home to rest. We review when you can eat and resume normal activity before you leave.

Questions to ask before oral sedation

Ask when and where to take the prescribed medication, and whether your companion should bring you to the office before the first dose. Confirm eating and drinking instructions and what to do with your usual medicines. Do not use someone else's sedative or take extra medication because you still feel anxious.

Discuss how discomfort will be controlled during treatment. Avoiding an IV does not mean avoiding all injections: local anesthesia may still be needed to numb the area being treated.

Arrange time to recover

Have your responsible adult hear the discharge instructions with you. Confirm how long to avoid driving, work and other activities, and how long someone should stay with you. Recovery from sedation and recovery from the dental procedure may follow different timelines.

Understand your estimate

Ask whether sedation is listed separately from the dental treatment and which follow-up visits are included. Request an estimate of your expected insurance contribution and personal cost before making a decision.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Will I be asleep with oral sedation?
You may feel drowsy or doze off with oral sedation. Your experience and memory of the visit depend on the medication, dose and your response. Ask your dentist what level of sedation is planned; oral sedation is not the same as general anesthesia.
Do I need a driver after oral sedation?
Yes. The effects can last for hours, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you while they wear off.
How long does oral sedation last?
It varies by medication and dose, but effects often continue for the rest of the day. We give you specific guidance for your appointment.
Is oral sedation safe?
Oral sedation is generally safe for appropriate candidates when chosen after a medical-history review and monitored during treatment. Every method has potential risks, so we review your health and medications first.
What should I do before an oral sedation appointment?
Follow the instructions we provide, which typically include when to take the medication, any eating guidance, and arranging your driver. Ask us if anything is unclear.
Which offices offer oral sedation?
All four Village Dental offices — Olde Raleigh, North Raleigh, Brier Creek, and Wake Forest — offer oral sedation.
Does insurance cover oral sedation?
Coverage varies by plan, procedure, and medical necessity. We can review your benefits and provide an estimate before treatment.
