About Dental Crowns

When a Tooth Needs More Than a Filling

A crown is a custom cap that fits over a whole tooth, rebuilding its shape and strength when there's too little healthy tooth left to hold a filling. Teeth reach that point in ordinary ways — a molar cracks on a popcorn kernel, an old silver filling finally fails, decay runs deeper than expected, or years of grinding wear the surface flat. Once the structure is compromised, a crown is what lets you chew normally again without worrying the tooth will split.

Patients come to Village Dental for crowns from every corner of the Triangle — Six Forks and North Hills, the Brier Creek and RTP side, Edwards Mill near the PNC Arena, and up Capital Boulevard toward Wake Forest. The trigger is usually the same: a sharp edge on the tongue, a tooth that aches when you bite down, or a dentist pointing out a hairline crack on an X-ray. Catching it before the tooth breaks all the way usually means a simpler, less expensive repair.

Modern crowns are tooth-colored porcelain, not the metal of years past, so a finished crown blends in with the teeth around it. They also work hand in hand with other restorations — a crown often finishes a root canal, anchors a bridge, or replaces a worn inlay or onlay. Your Crown Appointment

What to Expect When You Get a Crown

Most crowns take two visits. The first shapes and scans the tooth and sends you home with a temporary; the second seats your finished porcelain crown and checks the bite.

Numb & Prepare

We numb the tooth completely, remove any decay or the old filling, then shape the tooth so the crown has room to sit flush. You feel pressure at most — and if you're anxious, we'll talk through sedation before we begin.

Digital Impression

A small wand scans the prepared tooth and the teeth around it in a few minutes — no putty trays, no gagging. We match the shade to your natural teeth and send the design to the lab while you wear a temporary crown.

Seat & Adjust

At the second visit, usually one to two weeks later, we remove the temporary, check the fit and color, then bond the permanent crown in place. We fine-tune the bite so it feels even and natural before you leave.

Materials & Fit

Why a Well-Fitted Porcelain Crown Lasts

A crown lives or dies on two things: the seal at its edge and the material it's made from. A crown that doesn't seat precisely leaves a gap where decay can creep back in under it — which is why we take a digital impression rather than a traditional putty tray. The scan captures the margin of the prepared tooth far more accurately, and accuracy at that edge is what keeps a crown sound for a decade or more.

For the crown itself we use tooth-colored porcelain and ceramic that we shade-match to your other teeth, so the result looks like enamel rather than dental work. During the visit we put the tooth up on a screen with our intraoral cameras, so you can see the crack or the failing filling for yourself — for most people that's the moment the crown makes sense. If grinding is what damaged the tooth in the first place, we'll talk about protecting your new crown with a night guard so history doesn't repeat.

Two things hold true at every Village Dental office. First, we give you the price in writing before we start, so there are no surprises after the fact. Second, this is a judgment-free practice — it doesn't matter whether your last visit was six months or six years ago, and many of our crown patients had been avoiding the dentist until a tooth finally gave out. We also keep same-day windows open daily, so a broken or aching tooth can often be seen quickly.

Cost & Coverage

How Much Does a Crown Cost in Raleigh?

What you pay for a crown depends on the tooth, the material, and whether the tooth needs other work first — a straightforward porcelain crown sits at the low end, while a crown that follows a root canal or a buildup runs higher. Most dental plans treat a crown as a major restorative service and cover a share when it's needed to repair a tooth. We give you a written estimate before any work starts and verify your benefits up front. Village Dental is in-network with the major dental insurance providers below.

Please note: We do not accept Medicaid. If you're uninsured, ask about the Village Dental Membership Plan — it bundles your preventive visits and gives you a discount on additional treatment, including crowns and other restorative care.

New patients: Your first exam and X-rays are free. If a tooth has been bothering you, that's an easy place to start.

Crowns in Raleigh — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a dental crown cost in Raleigh?

Crown cost depends on the tooth, the material, and how much repair the tooth needs first — a straightforward porcelain crown sits at the low end, while a crown that follows a root canal or a buildup costs more. We give you a written estimate before any work starts, and most dental plans pay a share of a crown when it's needed to restore a tooth. We're in-network with Delta Dental Premier, Cigna PPO, BCBS Grid, and United Concordia Elite. Call (919) 205-4829 for an estimate.

Which Village Dental location can put on a crown?

All four of them. Village Dental places crowns at our Olde Raleigh, North Raleigh, Brier Creek, and Wake Forest offices, each using a digital impression instead of a tray full of putty. Pick whichever office is easiest for you and book there directly. Call (919) 205-4829 or check all our locations to find the nearest one.

How many visits does a crown take?

Usually two. At the first visit the tooth is numbed and shaped, a digital scan is taken, and you leave with a temporary crown. The lab builds your custom porcelain crown over the next week or two, and at the second visit it's bonded into place and the bite is fine-tuned. If the tooth needs a root canal or a buildup first, plan on an extra step. Call (919) 205-4829 to get started at any Village Dental office.

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. The tooth is fully numbed with a local anesthetic before any shaping, so you shouldn't feel the work itself. Some tenderness or temperature sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and usually fades. If dental anxiety is what has kept you away, we offer sedation options to keep you relaxed through the appointment. Call (919) 205-4829 with any questions.

Will my insurance cover a crown at Village Dental?

Often, yes. Most dental plans treat a crown as a major restorative service and pay a portion when the crown is needed to repair a broken or decayed tooth. We're in-network with Delta Dental Premier, Cigna PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield Grid, and United Concordia Elite, and we verify your benefits before treatment so you know your out-of-pocket cost up front. We do not accept Medicaid. Call (919) 205-4829 with your insurance card handy.

Do I need a crown or just a filling?

It depends on how much tooth is left. A filling rebuilds a small area of decay, but once a large portion of the tooth is gone, cracked, or worn, a filling can't hold up and a crown is the more durable fix because it caps the whole tooth. An inlay or onlay sometimes bridges the gap between the two. We'll show you the tooth on a screen and walk through the options. Call (919) 205-4829 to be evaluated.

How long do dental crowns last?

A well-made porcelain crown typically lasts ten to fifteen years, and often longer with good care. What shortens that is the same thing that wears down natural teeth — grinding, clenching, and hard habits like chewing ice. We check your crowns at routine cleanings and can fit a night guard if grinding is the culprit. Call (919) 205-4829 if a crown feels loose, rough, or sensitive.

Do I always need a crown after a root canal?

Usually on a back tooth, yes. A tooth that has had a root canal is hollowed out and more brittle, so a crown is what keeps it from fracturing under chewing force. Front teeth that take less load sometimes do fine without one. We'll tell you honestly whether your tooth needs the crown or not. Call (919) 205-4829 to talk it through.

Is there a dentist near me in North Raleigh or Brier Creek for crowns?

Yes. Village Dental places crowns at our North Raleigh office on Six Forks Rd and our Brier Creek office off Brier Creek Pkwy, along with Olde Raleigh near Edwards Mill and our Wake Forest office on Capital Blvd. Each office uses digital impressions and matches the crown to your surrounding teeth. Pick the one closest to you and call (919) 205-4829 to schedule.

Can I be sedated if I'm anxious about getting a crown?

Yes. We offer sedation options for patients who feel anxious about dental work, so a crown appointment can be calm and comfortable from start to finish. Plenty of crown patients had been putting off treatment for years until a tooth finally cracked, and this is a judgment-free practice no matter how long it's been. Call (919) 205-4829 to ask which sedation option fits you.
