Inlays & Onlays
What Are Inlays & Onlays?
Dentists will typically do everything possible to restore an existing tooth rather than to replace the tooth. Many times the solution for saving a tooth involves a variation of an inlay or an onlay. Inlays and onlays are also known as partial crowns, and are used to restore shape, prevent any further damage, and strengthen the tooth. For residents needing an inlay or onlay in Raleigh, the best destination is Village Dental where talented dentists offer an exceptional experience.
Inlay Vs. Onlay
An inlay is used when it is possible to lay the partial crown on top of the tooth because there is no damage to the cusps.
An onlay is used when there is damage to the cusp of a tooth.
An onlay has similarities to an inlay, but an onlay is actually extended to replace the cusp of the tooth. The decayed area of the tooth is removed and the restoration is made from porcelain, gold or a composite resin. These types of restorations are far more visually appealing than silver fillings. In addition to the superior aesthetics, they have also been proven to provide additional strength to weakened teeth. This process takes around 2-3 weeks, so we will outfit you with a temporary inlay or onlay. Once the permanent restoration is applied, the fit and feel will be natural and no one will be able to tell you’ve had work done!
