What is Sedation Dentistry?
For many patients, due to past experiences or preconceptions, going to the dentist can be a bit unnerving. At Village Dental, we understand and make it our goal to create an environment that is calm and relaxed for our patients, and we do this by offering sedation dentistry. As the sedation dentistry experts, our phobic patients are fully comfortable and relaxed for their appointment. We administer sedation through nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or IV depending on the needs of the patient. The treatment relaxes our patients, often to the point of deep relaxation through the entire process, cutting out anxiety and worry, and leaving little memory of the procedure at all! Offering sedation dentistry today!
“Sedation dentistry really is for anyone. If you have difficulty getting numb, a gag reflex, or even just difficulty sitting still for a whole—there are so many reasons to get sedated."
“80% of patients at Village Dental choose some form of sedation for their care, whether it be nitrous oxide, pill sedation, or IV sedation.”
Types of Sedation Offered at Village Dental
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
This is most commonly known as laughing gas and is administered via a nasal mask during your visit. Patients that undergo nitrous oxide sedation feel very relaxed during their visit. Once treatment is complete, the nasal mask is removed and the effects of nitrous wear off almost immediately. Patients that undergo this type of sedation are able to drive home and resume normal activities.
IV Sedation
This type of sedation is for patients that have a strong fear or phobia of the dentist. With IV Sedation, patients are in a deep, almost dream like state during their visit. This is a wonderful type of sedation for patients that have a big fear of the dentist or patients that have years’ worth of dental work to complete in one visit.
Oral/Pill Sedation
Oral sedation is administered in pill form a few hours before your appointment and just before we begin. It puts patients into a calm, sleepy state, while allowing them to stay awake and respond to our doctor’s commands. While the calming effects are great, when choosing oral sedation, we require patients to have a family member present to drive them to and from the dental office.
Sedation with a Paramedic
At Village Dental, we care about your health foremost. This is why whenever you choose sedation dentistry, you are monitored by a trained, experienced paramedic. Having a paramedic on our team is unique to Village Dental, but we believe necessary to keep our patients and community safe. We work with paramedics because they have extensive anesthesia training and keep calm even in the rare instance when a problem might occur. You deserve nothing less than the best, and that is why we are one of the few practices in the nation to keep patients safe with paramedics.
“The support here at Village Dental is great. They want you to be just as good at work as you are at home.”
How Sedation Dentistry Changes Lives
“I hate feeling pain and my teeth always hurt. But one of the things that drew me to Village Dental was they had sedation dentistry. It was great because I didn’t have to worry about anything.”
“Nothing causes me more anxiety than to walk into a dentist’s office. When I found sedation dentistry at Village Dental, I didn’t mind going to the dentist because I knew that if I had to have work done, I could sleep through it.”
Common Questions
Sedation dentistry works differently depending on which method of sedation you choose. We offer three types of sedation at Village Dental.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the most common form of sedation and is administered through inhalation. This sedation works best for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. You will recover quickly and be able to resume your normal activities immediately.
Oral sedation is a small pill that is taken by the patient prior to their procedure starting. This level of sedation deeply relaxes patients and puts them in a calm state. Most people will fall asleep or not remember their procedure at all. This solution is great for those with moderate anxiety, but they will need a trusted friend or family member present to drive them home afterward.
IV sedation is carefully administered by your doctor and delivers a medication directly into your bloodstream to help you reach a deeper state of relaxation. This is best for patients with more moderate to severe anxiety or for those that require longer or more complex procedures. You will need to have someone accompany you to your appointment because the effects will take several hours to wear off and it is unsafe to drive yourself home from your appointment.
If you experience dental anxiety, you are a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Both children and adults can benefit from sedation. If you experience any of the following fears or concerns, ask your doctor about sedation as an option for your next dental appointment:
- Extreme dental anxiety or fear of visiting the dentist
- Fear of needles and/or shots
- PTSD from a dental experience
- Sensitive teeth, strong gag reflex, tolerance to numbing procedures
- Sensitivity to smells or noises at the dentist
- Need for complex treatment
- Desire for a comfortable dental treatment
