Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth often begin developing around the late teenage years, but may not show any signs until much later in life. This last set of molars can sometimes cause complications and need to be removed. When patients preemptively extract their wisdom teeth, they can avoid discomfort and pain in the future. Wisdom teeth that need to be extracted can affect surrounding teeth and cause other issues if not removed when recommended.

Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth Coming In

If you are having any of these symptoms related to your wisdom teeth, call your dentist right away to schedule a visit. Wisdom teeth can cause many complications, including the following:

  • Swollen gums or jaw
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Jaw pain
  • Bad breath or bad taste in mouth
  • Trouble opening your mouth
  • Headaches
  • Infection in the gums

Causes of Wisdom Tooth Pain

  • Impaction

Sometimes, wisdom teeth will have no room to grow due to the size of the jaw and position of surrounding teeth. If a wisdom tooth cannot grow in any direction, it becomes impacted and can cause a lot of pain and swelling. This often means the tooth is growing in at an improper position or crowding the existing teeth.

  • Partial eruption

When a wisdom tooth can only partially grow, it often erupts partially above the gums and below. This creates an area where bacteria can form below the gumline, causing infection. Partial eruption can often lead to discomfort and trouble using the mouth like normal.

  • Tumors or cysts

Wisdom tooth impaction can lead to tumors or cysts. If these form, the area around the wisdom tooth can become very painful and even cause complications to your systemic health.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Solution

If you do not have room for wisdom teeth to grow or experience other complications, your dentist may recommend removal of those teeth. Depending on the position of your wisdom teeth, you may need surgical removal. Impacted wisdom teeth typically require surgical removal due to their position and the sensitive nerves and tooth roots surrounding them. If this is the case, an experienced oral surgeon can remove your wisdom teeth to help avoid complications and relieve your jaw pain.
